Instinct Control - From his website: The connection between the individual and technology always takes time to develop into an accessible living relationship. As humanity welcomes technology into its everyday life it first utilizes, then feels comforted by, and then is consumed. By personalizing our connection with the tools we use, we rehumanize and take control of our mechanical advantage. From the spear, to the satellite—first a method, then a way. Sat 08/01 FrequeNC Records Dance Party- First Saturday of every month DANCE PARTY!! Djs, fog lights and video - 10 PM
Wed 08/04 The Tenderfruit (Chapel Hill) / The Tenderhooks (TN)- 9:30 PM
Tues 08/11 Birds and Arrows / The Native Young (Bloomington) - 9:30 PM
Sat 08/15 Nathan Oliver / Ghots to Falco / Oblisk - 10 PM
"The musical and artistic world of Nathan Oliver can only be roughly described in a hodgepodge scenario: Imagine Royal Tenenbaum director Wes Anderson, artist Art Spiegelman and a bunch of bohemians got drunk and stole instruments out of the back of the Pixies van to hold their own jam sessions while laughing all the way home.
A dark, sarcastic but strangely fun and inviting humor surrounds the band and its popish-alternative sound. Even Oliver's cover art and flyers, done by San Francisco artist Allison Gore, has an absurd and dark comedy about it. Pop-rock lately has taken on the image of either over-dressed sexed jailbait with cookie-cutter lyrics or guys with mascara-stained shirts from their tears, of course, following the break up of their two-week tryst with some girl. Nathan Oliver is outside the lines of all that, looking in and goofing on it."--Andrew Kinback, Encore
Thurs 08/20 Black Metal Film Screening : Until the Light Takes Us / Mysterium Tremendum - 9:30 PM $9
The documentary is about the hugely-influential second-wave black metal scene in 1990's Norway, and features interviews with Varg (aka Burzum, recently released from prison -- the film's title is the English translation of a Burzum title), Fenriz (of Darkthrone), and many other personalities responsible for the development and dissemination of (anti-)modern black metal as both a viable sub-genre and an important cultural movement.
The film, co-directed by Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites (he of the left-field indie band Iran, records on the Tumult and Narnack labels), screened at SXSW and is now screening in select larger markets across the US.
