Sat 11/4 - Physics of Meaning, DES_ARK, Hope for a Golden Summer, Auxiliary House / DJS - It's gonna be a big ole Saturday bash, wit' a full alleyway and Daniel Heart's hip-hop entourage arriving in H3 Limo. I heard it has the Terminix bug on top, plus accordian, minus the Cali Cesar Salad. Away with that shit, I want East Coast Anchovy Paste. Indeed, it's a full night of local flavas. No cross country Mack Truck rides involved, just pure fresh goodness from the Nightlight garden. A virtual mesclun mix of musical delights. Packed house a guarantee. Bring cash. Help us keep the bathroom clean. Toothless freaks allowed but do respect the house please? 10:00 PM / $5
Sun 11/05 Jason Forrest and The Assdroids - Jason Forrest AKA Donna Summer plus Assdroids. The undead will rise, shave the moss off their tongue, and come out to enjoy the spazz-riddled land that exists between breakcore and ecstatic jazz. Say Assdroids aloud to experience a new kind of school lunch. Jason Forrest of Berlin produces records of a most rapid-fire craziness that exists beyond computers. The Brain of HAL 9000 gets disrupted - this is the only way to save the future!!!! Music to survive apocalyptic bowel movements. The Assdroids are the Pied Piper of cell phone ring tone magical energy. Two guys(?) one named Pisces Motherfucker and the other named Big Daddy Mugglestone. They hail from Berlin as well and they like to say "sleng teng". It's the password to get to level three, where you get the +7 high-heeled boots of Necrofreakoff. Dance music for bow-legged crow heads. 10 PM / $8
Mon 11/6 - Vialka / Alec K. Redfearn , Dead Western , Inspector 22 - Editorial Note- Right before my very eyes this is shaping up to be one of the most interesting nights of the Fall. While booking Dead Western I come to find out that TROY MIGHTY, who is Dead Western, is very good buds with Alec k. Redfearn and Troy just released a new 7" on the same label in Barcelona as Vialka. It's like a mini-reunion show. On with descriptors. A two piece (guitar/drums/vox) travelling micro-circus known as Vialka will be making their way from their land of France to join us this special, special Monday night. They perform as if to deliver a tonic, a tonic of healing, soothing old world remedy, but wicked-fried and dressed to kill. Their entire musical being is an ongoing sociological experiment in charged pheromones and swirling intercourse, verbal and otherwise. They are a much-more worldly example of what S.C.O.T.S. would be like if they were born in Ukraine and listened to Rush. They bring along North East Indie Recording artist Alec K. Redfearn, who seems to spend his spare time passed out next to his Accordian. Alec specializes in pastoral contemplation and melody - a children's choir would aspire to beauty such as this but come up short for lack of inventiveness. Aforementioned Dead Western is Troy Mighty, of Antennas Erupt and album art fame. His illustrations have graced the presence of many beautiful recordings and concert posters, including a sick Erase Errata flyer that hung on the wall in my old house from a bygone era of Chapel Hill freaknasty. Dead Western is a musical entity that has a solemn quality to it that belies an underlying strum of hope for the future. The lonely guitar chords are companion to Troy's deep resonance and the complete sound makes me yearn for waking up too early on Sunday morning. Inspector 22 is Todd Emmert. Todd is one of the most talented and interesting folks you might meet in Chapel Hill. He and Mike Myerson form the core of both Mowing Lawns and Hamburgur Helpur, which are long and new favorites of nine, respectively. Todd draws beautiful illustrations that have melted the pages of Bananafish Magazine, his series of drawings of fictional composers is genius, and his pet portraits are the psychedelic burning flame of the mantles of only the most discriminating pet owners. Inspector 22 is his solo swirl cone, hard to describe but equally memorable. It reflects a deep distrust of convention and authority through its murky style, which begs the uninitiated listener to wonder who or what made this record? At CD Alley you can pick up Friendship Cemetary Revisited, and together we can all pretend we suffer from dementia in the Alaska backwoods, while the inside of our mind will provoke a soft jelly center. Guitar and tapes are the main treats from which flow the sound Inspector 22. Overall, this show has the potential to make you peaceful and contemplative, then suddenly urged to bump off your seat and swelter. 10 PM / $6
Tue 11/7 - Rotten Milk vs Bubblegum Shitface / Waterbabies / My Fairy Prince / more. RMVSBS = Chicago's Terry Plumming Heads, Lumpen Magazine Editor at Large, Nomadic garbage noise improvers with a certain TP flair for grotesque + scatalogical funk gestures ... WATERBABIES =prog/dance/noise/rock quartet featuring members of Mahjonng, BOBBY CONN band, Lazer Crystal & Chandeliers - MY FAIRY PRINCE =according to Rotten Milk, "solo noise performance gay as can be" - I bet there are some of you out there who like that sort of thing! 9:30PM / $5.
Thur 11/9 - FREQUENC presents A VERY INCREDIBLE CREW OF DJs AND LIVE DANCE MUSIC - U.S.A.O.K. tour feat from the Netherlands DJ Overdose and The Novamen, Manhunter (DC), and Morelli (NYC).
Whew. Took a while for me to get all that info out of my mouth. Charlie Hearon of FREQUENC records emails me and says hey there is this incredible crew of Dutch musicians who want to come to Chapel Hill. They're only doing gigs in NYC and Boston and Philly but they want to come to Chapel Hill. LUCKY US, huh?
Here's da infos. About NOVAMEN: Producing records for Dutch labels Viewlexx, Murder Capital, and Bunker while creating a cult-like underground following a world over, Novamen is Ingmar Pauli and Dj Overdose. Having met as youths in primary school in Holland, Overdose and Pauli with their mutual and obsessive love of music decided to buy some gear and started to make music together. Drawing influences from the classic sounds of early-New York hip hop, Miami Bass, and West Coast electro Novamen was born. With 808's and vocoder in-tow, Novamen have done two U.S. tours and played all across Europe alongside the likes of I-f, Alden Tyrell, Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupitor, Legowelt, Dexter, Cosmic Force, Luke Eargoggle and countless others. Having recently released the "Vamos a la Hava" ep on the OST label, September of this year will see the release of their "Lies" album on Viewlexx . In addition, both Pauli and Overdose have been staying busy with their solo works and collaborations with others, continuing to release records with the rest of the Dirty Brown and Miserable family throughout Holland.
About: RON MORELLI (the FALCON) After spearheading the influential Damage? Damage! party and playing as a resident at the now defunct 976 party, Ron Morelli left his native New York for the streets of Philadelphia, returning to NYC after two years away. Keeping busy while in Philadelphia, the New York transplant's Reagan Disco Headache and Paradise parties have served as one of the few outlets in Philadelphia to hear true leftfield dance music old and new. Bringing in guests as diverse as Sal Principato of Liquid Liquid, Tim Sweeney of DFA/Beats In Space, DJ SmallChange of WFMU, Brennan Green of Balihu/Modal, Nick Chacona of Bearfunk, Baltimore Club killers Tittsworth & Nada, LeTigre remixer Lauren Flax, or Star Eyes of the Syrup Girls/XLR8R magazine; the monthly parties have received accolades in both local and national publications. As far as dj sets are concerned at any given moment Ron can be found playing classic WBMX house, detroit techno, ghettohouse, off-kilter disco and everything in-between. Recent dates have included frequent opening slots for DFA recording artists Black Dice, anti-DEMF parties for Soft Curls at Detroit's Bohemian National Hall, CCIA, and the Detroit Eagle, as well as playing the opening party for the Adidias Adi-color campaign at the Philadelphia store. Currently, Morelli is very happy to be back lurking the streets of New York City and eating good food again. February 2006 saw the release of the "900 lb man" ep, a collaboration between Ron and Balihu's Brennan Green with remixes by Japanese disco producers Force Of Nature (Kent & KZA), on Japan's Jet Set Records.
About: MANHUNTER To know Washington, D.C. is to know the legend of D.I.Y. punk music. From the Bad Brains to Minor Threat to famed demento noize-punx No Trend to gritty Go-Go pioneers the Junkyard Band, the Chocolate City has never been short on channeling the oppressive energy cast by the shadow of the nation's capital to turn it into something creatively explosive and dangerous. While exploring the outer-realms of early euro-electronics and kraut rock as hosts of a local college radio show, both Ari Goldman and Jason Letkiewicz pulled double duty working the late shift at a video store in town. It was there a chance encounter with an older co-worker who once frequented Chicago's infamous Music Box explained the connection between much of the music they were playing on their radio show and the Chicago house djs who would mix many of these groups with sped up disco and the newly emerging music at the time known as house. Always dabbling in various music projects, from this point on it was clear to Goldman and Letkiewicz what direction they were going in. Fast forward to the present, now equipped with a 909, numerous synths, and a D.C. punk rock attitude, Manhunter has been churning out italo inspired jack tracks and taking to the streets with their own brand of the Chi-town sound of old. Recent appearances on Ghostly's "Idol Tryouts Vol.II" and a self-titled ep are just the beginning for the duo as the vault is full of new mind-burners for the masses.
Fri 11/10 - EARLY - CHARALAMBIDES, JOSEPHINE FOSTER, Chuck Johnson 10 PM $6 - - - - LATER Scorpio Dance Party feat. DATAHATA, One Duran, Markus Maerk $3 - Such a wonderful chain of events to unfold in our lives this season. First we have Texas folk/psyche/country/drone/blues/ethnic/primitive legends Charalambides, Josephine Foster with lullabies, plus our beloved Chuck Johnson . Charalambides features Christina Carter, who turned our heads back on Sunday Sept 17th, that fateful day. Christina Carter and Tom Carter explore a singular form of interplay amongst spiritual soul-lifting forms and formlessness through developed interplay and a respect for chance. Songs get worked for skeletal structures to include and then exclude the haunting vocalizations of Christina while the masterful guitarwork of Christina and Tom is laid bare between and amongst slight noises like bells and wind. A true treat for the Nightlight faithful. We also have Chuck Johnson, who is a local treasure, but I heard he's moving to NYC, so this might be one of your last chances to see Chuck so accessibly. Chuck has offered a "mystical drone set", which sounds very Middle-Earth to me. Elves, dwarves, and Chuck's masterful work at creating and sustaining subtly nuanced yet very pronounced musical passages using whatever he pleases, including but not limited to guitar, homemade electronic devices, and a mysterious suitcase. Chuck has played in Spatula, Idyll Swords, Shark Quest, Pykrete, Tobacco Movies, and now the Nein. What a wonderful man, we all agree. Mucho amor para Chuck! After we relax and get unspooked from Chuck and Charalambides, a special appearance by former Chapel Hill resident/now ASHEVILLE party lover ZEKE GRAVES, who will be rolling down from Asheville to twiddle our dee-lite-alicious twizzler dispenser. One Duran spins your fucking hed off. Right round the turntable out comes thick deep beats and funky ass hip-hop glory. Markus Maerk - organized Signal Music Fest and now we get him for a night. When I think of MM I think of those dirty dirty Edwards Street parties with the International Crowd. Think Live Dance Music, Think DATAHATA, Think about those bass notes and Live it UP!
Sat 11/11 - "Quiet Night" (unofficial title) w/ Across the Elementary / Ingenue (Rachel Hirsh from AOK) / European Ambulance / Above the Ground - Singer/songwriter intimate vibe and drinking coffee right before bedtime. Earlier show - starts at 8:00 so you can get a sandwich! Love, Nightlight. 8 PM $5
Tues 11/14 - Dig Shovel Dig / The Whole World Laughing / Plane Crash / Videohippos - Asheville couch testers bring toe-tapping keyboard slag with bass/drums feroxity and not an ounce of pretense, despite the fact that their 7 Inch Record on Lookalive records was titled Recent Works From the Most Important Composers in the Universe. For fans of cheap bourbon and infrequent shaving (legs or face). Hype reggae farcical indescribable theatrics - weird vocalizations and spooky in your face shoe-untying madness. Mark and Ted, bass and drums, they both sing (yell/slurp), and Ted plays the keyboard with his toes. I love it, and Mark turned me on to Lightning Bolt soon after they released Ride the Skies, and for that I am eternally grateful. They requested Plane Crash - Stuart will be going back to the old format, with the TVs and turntables and a lot of loud ass shit. Scotty Irving (Clang Quartet, Geezer Lake) and Dave Cantwell (Razzle, Cantwell, Gomez, & Jordan) have drum/bass ferox as well but of a different bent. Weird huh - two durm/bass bands in the same night? You might be thinking - oooh repition, skip this one two bands same thing, boring, blahblahblah. NOT SO YOUNG ONES! Where DSG bring a slathery lizard attack, grumbly jams of weird timing and unexpected spurts of "WHAAAKZ", TWWL is Southern Rock meets Japanese freak slime. Scotty and Dave burst out of tight pants with a speedy attack and clean yelling. It'll be like a panther with mumps vs an elephant on speed. Got it? Videohippos - WTF? VIDEOHIPPOS from Baltimore (home of John Waters and sludge) are going to be in NC for a week doing some shows, wat a supwise - 2 piece !drummer+ guitar! with video art pieces that are projected onto their bodies along with prerecorded keyboards/loops so this is like some kind of weird pairing here tonite. Wow what luck. :::::: part of the wham city art collective in Baltimore::::::::::: Sounds like the freaks come out to night, thanks Whodini! You will leave overstimulated, for sure. 10 PM $5
Fri 11/17 - Ear PWR / Blacks on Blondes - This is in the works, so the details are going to sneak up behind you and slash you like a samurai vengeance attack. HIYAH with a razor sharp baguette!
Sat 11/18 - Ahleuchatistas / Gutbucket/ Dr. Oakroot - Freako Spazz Jazz Nite. Dark cigar box blues guitar vox. Witching hour. Ahleuchatistas are Asheville's tight as hell nerd jazz rock outfit. Loud and complicated without any of that jamband pretentious tonal devotion. Sounds kinda like Ruins from a Blender - super A.D.D. for fans of looking closely at a strobe light while jumping on trampolines. "Avant-Rock" git/drms/bss. They played a festival in Austria, home of Arnold Schwarzenegger - are you hearing me - Schwarzenegger, Ahleuchatistas, why are you still sitting down? Gutbucket is coming from NYC, but they met Ahleuchatistas in Austria. They're coming south on tour to get some Duke's Mayonnaise, and so when they're in this neck of woods they get together with other band and voila - Nightlight have spazzo night. Gutbucket have a similar attack to Ahleu., but add in sax minus guitar to have more of a screechy sound vs Ahleus's diddly-diddly-woo. Reunion for these veterans of the Saalfelden, Austria's Saalfelden Jazz Festival. And then there's Dr. Oakroot. He is the rusty iron flake companion to my oat bran morning sludge. Self proclaimed "rough-edged songs from a dark place in the soul - songs to haunt your dreams." Everything pretty much played on homemade guitars made from cigar boxes or pruned limbs, for that "old woman smell". He's got a Diddley Bo, a Diddley Jo, The Cyclops, The Goblin, Gourbanjitar, Morning Star Ukelele, 17ET Dragon. Dude looks like he could scare the hell out of a little kid, and then whip out his Diddely Bo and lure a whole gaggle of wonder-eyed youngsters into the thicket for a demon song raising. 10 PM $5
Wed 11/22 - Nightlight Thank Give On Feastly Night OutVOLCANO THE BEAR - YAY! Volcano the Bear and then we eat marshmallow sweet potatoes with a fried turkey injected with garlic balls. This show will rule forever. We are but too lucky and must GIVE THANKS! more details etc and so forth.
Fri 11/24 - Thanks Been Gave Beautimous JingleJangle feat. Carpark Reps Beach House & Over the Atlantic, Adrian Orange and the Slave Child Rebellion, and The Tourist Turkey in the belly, donut with the jelly. Rhymes too cheesy, I admit, but with crazy pop and beauty fall gems like deez, who needs to work too hard on their holiday. HOORAH! I promise a whole string of descriptions, so chill. 10 PM $5
Sat 11/25 - FREQUENC RECORDS NIGHT!! Monthly party thrown by our homegrown squad of county line beat guerillas, every fourth saturday. AWOOOGA!
Wed 11/29 - DAT POLITICS / Kevin Blechdom / more !
Here is a gap for some reason . . .
Fri 12/22 - CREATIVEIMPROVISATIONMAS feat. EXTREME ANIMALS / bONER mACHINE / CANTWELL, GOMEZ & JORDAN -
A reinitiation of the positive messge of Creativeimprovisationmas, the original Nightlight tradition devoted to wordly change through the basic human interactions of dance, laughter, and inhibition-less cheer.
ONWARD!
First appearance in Chapel Hill for Boner Machine in 9,000,000 years. Chapel Hill's only costume fetish antagonistic folk group, credited with performing with Gang Gang Dance, Jackie-O-Motherfucker, Extreme Animals, Rotten Milk, Wooden Wand, Facedowninshit, Prurient, Pterodactyl, No Doctors, Radio Shock, Mowing Lawns, Occasional Detroit and more. We have all gotten very old, and the instruments we will be using do not exist anymore. Our costumes will show their ages, but not our youthful exuberance and boundless naivete. Our website has not been updated in quite some time, but the fan comments are still true.
Check out this testimony from "TIM"
"Boner Machine: a band full of people who have given up on caring about music, life, or anything else worth caring about. a band so jaded that they can't do anything but smash bottles and beat on pots. keep up the bad work, you make the rest of us look pretty smart."
Or hear the words of Mr. Brian of No Doctors.
"COVER "SKULLS" NEXT THAT IS A BONER MACHINE CODPIECE HACK THE HEADS OFF LITTLE GIRLS AND PUT THEM ON MY WALL WELL IT'S NOT SEXY BUT IT MAKES A POINT YOUR HEAD TO THE SKY, ALWAYS OBEY THE BOOGNISH AND TOUR WITH WEEN AS SOON AS BLO'EY LIKELY TO TOUR WITH US FOR NEXT TOUR SO GET YO AZZEZ OUT TO SF FOR THE NEW YEAR ALNA COURTIS IS WAITING AND SO IS OFF THE HOOK BEST BURRITOS IN THE WORLD, OUTSTANDING BUH!!!"
Shit what else? Oh YEAH - EXTREME ANIMALS - Kings of Rave-RAP-Rock and members of the Paperrad Collective, Extreme Animals are perhaps the number one Nightlight band ever. That statement might not be fair to some other bands, but it's hard to think of anyone who has come and destroyed Nightlight with sheer crazed dance energy like the Extreme Animals! EVER! Keyboards and Drums and Vox, Jacob and David met in High School in Chapel Hill! And of course, last but not least, C G + J haven't been in Nightlight for a while. We welcome them back and if Anne brings her sax, maybe she will play it in our HOLIDAY PARADE which starts right after the show! BRING YOUR TOYS< NOISEMAKERS< COSTUMES, AND POSITIVE ATTITUDES! Dave Dave and Anne are one the Triangle's quirkiest rock bands, falling somewhere between Yes, Corrosion of Conformity, and Eddie Money, while still retaining the beautiful cadence of Tina Turner. Come prepared to dance in the street.
10 PM $7
Sat 12/23 - FREQUENC RECORDS NIGHT!! Monthly party thrown by our homegrown squad of county line beat guerillas, every fourth saturday. CREATIVEIMPROVISATIONMASFREQUENCSTYLEE!? Charlie where dem details at? Locals only this night methinks, for the transplant students are long gone.
Oh he just dropped them-
Pretty sweet eh? 10 PM $4
Thurs 1/04 - Clang Quartet / Yellow Tears / Cathode Terror Secretion 10 PM $5 - A noise show to start the New Year. Of course, Clang Quartet will ring us in. Welcome 2007 with the Armor of God and free-form floor percussion. Scotty Irving is the pantheon, the newest wearer of the House Band crown at Nightlight, having usurped that role from Boyzone when USAISAMONSTER played last. Therefore, he is an appropriate torch bearer to welcome mysterious noise band Yellow Tears, who stand out for their bravery in touring at the beginning of the New Year. Cathode Terror Secretion are devoid of presence on the internet, leaving this author no choice but to compare them to Hank Williams Sr, Debbie Deb, ODB, and Dimebag Darrell. They just simply have to lie somewhere in the middle of all these fools. You're coming back to school right? Don't do your homework until after you hang out at this shiiiiiiot baaabay.
Sat 1/06 - Mothguts / Hispanic Dance Club - 10 PM $5 - Mothguts is jazz/grind with screech. Mouse in mouse trap thrashing on floor plus cheez wiz style guitar junk, puff paint earphones. Fuct jangle bells. Hispanic Dance Club is Kevin and Cole, trying to make it happen in the big city. It's hard for a young couple of guys to make it on their own, but they're gonna do it! Reported to be some sort of tape collage, this is local support the only way we know how.
Sun 1/07 - Screaming Females / Gary Coleman Death Squad / The Drowsies - 10 PM $5 - This seems to have the potential to be a punk rock show. Being a newcomer to the sounds and live atmosphere brought by each band, I can only surmise based on MySpace fodder and hearsay what one might expect. I did recieve a stellar recommendation from one Chaz Martenstein of Bull City Records, which is worth a lot more than empty promises from bands that say the same old stuff like -
My name is XXXXXX and I am a member of XXXXXXXXXXXX from Random Hole, NC. We are very interested in booking in your area and like to play for you and your customers
or
Thanks for reading this, and I hope you can see our
band working at your venue. Take care, and please let
me know what you think.
Hey,
I do appreciate politeness, but what really gets me interested is a high quality name drop, ample buzz, or GOOD MUSIC.
Of course, I am interested in other things too, like girls and fast cars.
MON 1/08 - Nicky Click - 10 PM - Ah so - Nicky Click has this one intimidated, for to fuck up the description might bring down the wrath of entire communities of personality overload. When we formulate our response to her charge, it will wear a torn skirt. Electro-pop styles and self-described "queer electro-pop diva" moves no doubt. We shall see what happens with the locals, Nicky brings her A-Game cuz our local styles will probably challenge her status as queen doll of electro divas. And you will be challenged to come discover a new booty drop. WITH erectro_lock and sHANNON'S bURLESQUE act.
Fri 1/12 - Killick / sqrt (ur mother) / Feral Pony - 10 PM $5 - "Killick" is an odd word from naval slang that describes a big rock or stone dropped overboard from a boat. Interesting, but then I check out this picture of the crazy looking stringed instrument that our Killick coming to town will play, and I stop thinking naval and start thinking about improv and strings. Which is what Killick seems to specialize in, with a deep heavy feel that borders on the geeky for sure. And Jason Bivins (guitar) should be joining him. Which is sorta why sqrt (ur mother) is also on the bill, because we definitely seem to have this scattered Bailey Play Backs sound going on here. sqrt (ur mother) is Brian Miller of Broken Fader Cartel doing a futuro-gamelan proto-hyper-koto computer sound that baffles the Pokemon on my pajama pants. He did so much work on that successful BFC showcase back in October that I am eternally grateful. Feral Pony surfaces foam litter skuzz with absurd tights and mannequoid derlision. This one dude uses a bunch of random home electronics to try to distill the flavor of his entire fucked-up life down into an interesting and challengin musical nightmare. I've never seen it, except through a cracked mirror coated in platinum glitter.
Tues 1/16 - Tourist / Sibling Project / David Era - 10 PM $5 - Tourist made me laugh with his jokes. Esp. the one about a song called "Please do not tune on stage". What a nice fella, that Tourist. In my humble opinion, built on decades of residence in and around the Triangle, he is the end all be all of the Cary music scene. Betcha didn't know that. He's on tour with Sibling Project across North Carolina, and I really hope they play a show at Merchant's Millpond State Park.
Fri 1/19 - Locust Music Reps Function w/ Dead Elephant Bicycle / Apothecary Hymns / Insect Factory- 10 PM $6 - This show defies description, but beautiful and intense both apply well, it seems. Function are holding down a coveted spot as orchestrators of interesting bucolic serenades, a musical shag carpet and the tics from the back of a golden golgi apparatus. Intricacy of erudite vision translates into a shape-shifting ensemble rotating cast of talents, creating soundscapes of lush vision. Plus they will be a seven-piece with laptop, guitar, viola, bass, keyboards, trombone, banjo, flute, video projections. WOW! Dylan Angel's Dead Elephant Bicycle fulfills a similar promise, for it's sheer variety of orchestration and complexity of musical vision. While Function is quite certainly Matt Nicholson, Dead Elephant Bicycle is wholly Dylan, although the swell and ebb of his ensemble requires imagination. Alex from Apothecary Hymns will come and play a solo set, so this is like five slices of pie on three plates, sabia? And Insect Factory - minimalist guitar drone from the traditino of Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Fripp/Eno - all the best names.
Sat 1/20 - AOK / Some of the Above / Places to Live / Crown Doesn't Card - 10 PM $5 - All ages in 07, forever and ever?
THRS 1/25 - Midtown Dickens / Marla Hooch / The Curtains of Night / Boxcar Bertha10 PM $6 - This show has all the potential of a wound-up spring coil flashdance tornado danger. A virtual virtuose panoply of pleasing bands of various stylings so diverse and happy-go-lucky you have no choice but to submit to the infinite vortex. Note Marla Hooches' dance stylings, Midtown Dickens slow dance lovey-dovey, and Boxcar Bertha's hearkening back to hobo days.
Fri 1/26 - CLRQ BLMQST / Jocelyn Arem / Soundsofsingles / Maggie Goldston / - 10 PM $6 - We got the friggin folkiest folks ever here, a whole slab of folk, from bleak folk to r&b/folk/country/alt, CLRQ from Shallow Be Thy Name, and then you came back home wondering why you never learned the guitar. From Tucson to Durham to Grad School to Carrboro, you are alive with the passing of pick from finger to string, and breathing in the fresh air of now.
Sat 1/27 - FrequeNC Records Night - 10 PM $3 - Charlie told me this one's gonna be off the heez but he always kinda makes it a mystery until the last, last minute. Then BANG like a Batman punch you get told that a party's going off in here.
Fri 2/2 - Groundhog Day Party feat. Across the Elementary / Sweater Weather / Shapiro - 10 PM $5 - Special appearance by Bill Murray on keyboard for Sweater Weather. HIYAH!
Sat 2/10 - Caltrop / Hex Machine / Tigerbearwolf - 10 PM $5 - This show was originally supposed to happen back in September or October, minus tbw plus with the band Cough from Richmond. Through unfortunate circumstances, Hex Machine and Cough both had to cancel. The show started late, but Caltrop still ripped it up way, way tougher than barking your shins on coral. Shredding and chugging heavy duty strut jack boot slasher rock by a very talented line-up of John Crouch (Country Bears, Hazerai), Murat Dirlik (El Sucio, Jule Brown, Kerbloki), Adam Nolton (Pegasus, Red Smokes White), Sam Taylor (Eagle Bravo, El Sucio, Continent), and Jason Aylward (The Ladderback, Continent, Valient Thorr). Hex Machine (from Richmond) have been smoking cigarettes constantly on the first floor of Satan's country villa in Lizard Lick since you were in Diapers.
Tigerbearwolf rounds out the bill and makes this a bonafide super-rock bonanza, I mean, the walls are going to swell up with heavy ass rock power like giant lazer-equipped albatrosses with super sharp sonic claws that rip through your clothes and leave you disheveled and sweating. But of course in a totally good way. . .
Tues 2/12 - COSTES / Jason Crumer w/Buddy Ship / Clang Quartet / Mr. Natural - 10 PM $6 Dude, this one redeems February, the shortest month of the year wearing bloody underwear. COSTES rules the underground of French opera and theatrically redeems the lost genre of phantom-musicals. The deathknell tolling for Julie Andrews from high-a-top the French highlands all the way to Switzerland with the power of unmitigated clout as the King of Disturbing Entertainment. Nude troupes, and police investigations into his motives and catalyst make this controversy a special guest of the Nightlight, and no doubt, this show will go down in history even if only two people can make it through. Thanks RAM. Clang Quartet is as much a theatrical tribulation as Costes, the Grizzly Bear to Costes's emu. You know you want to make me a pizza now. Oh and wait we just added Jason Crumer to the bill, mrfukkinscumbag title revoked in honor of his new role as the spiller of earhole blood. Well, and then we added Buddy Ship too, his buds from Providence who do that Providence thing, you know, loud ass guitars and drums and everyone freaks the fuck out. I just went and saw Apocalypto so everything is tinged in red and reminiscent of a giant human sacrifice. Therefore, in my mind of minds this show will likely herald a bad omen like indigestion or clogged toilets. Mr. Natural is from Tennessee and he makes music from plants.
Fri 2/16 -DMVB / Embarrassing Fruits / Ships (Deep Sea Diving Members) / Remote Islands - 10 PM $5 - DMVB is Viswas Chitnis's band from Raleigh - If I need to tell you more you obviously did not go to high school with me. Regardless, this is just the threshold of a night filled with the lump-smog of sweet rock-pop from R-VegaZ our neighbor to the east. V-Was no play Sitar but still transcend genre and meld hogg wild with new school. Added on top of that is two bands, one Trekky , Embarrasing Fruits and then Ships, a Deep Sea Diving offshot. Night is shaping up like a kiss on the neck. Remote Islands crew is friends of Viswas from Philly. It's called "awesome rock".
Tues 2/20 - Radio Shock / Femme Covert / Hairs (ex-Hide and Seek) / Symbolist Vampires - 10 PM Breakdown - Radio Shock is manpower keyboard rock'n'roll power, like Torch Marauder in exercise clothes singing Tina Turner, but ghetto anthems. Femme Covert is a lot of loud singing guys jumping around to loud beats and trying to incite a riot. History note - Last time Radio Shock came to town, Boner Machine played in the street and UNC won the Collegiate Men's National Basketball Championship! We're still number-fucking-one, and we're spiffy dressed and natty haired taboot! Reports of rambling gangs of slippery metal monkey-men invading this night. Take your medicine, Bobby! f you remember Hide and Seek then Hairs is your sludge trio of choice. Symbolist Vampires is disco-death dub by three XYC jocks morgan and steven and jon. no promises on sound except I bet it loud and proud.
Wed 2/21 - Marnie Stern / Barr / Skeptic Tank / Vaguely Christian-Babymaker / dj set by Feral Pony - 10 PM $6 - 5 Rue Christine - what a label! Marnie Stern (NYC)rips some serious guitar shit I tell you, like some mick barr shit but this time with wildly arid and airy femmeVox being rototilled through yer corpuscles. She's got some Kill Rock Stars stuff out too! Barr (LA) takes a drum and his voice (and a full four piece band), and spouts poetry and words like unheard of chants for personal sacrifice and emotional wrong-doing. It's a real from the streets kinda feel, like a casio beat on steroids being broadcast from the inside of a samurai rabbit comik. Kinda geeky/nerdy, almost, wouldn't ya say? I don't really know cuz I never saw them, BUT YOU CAN BET I'M NOT GONNA MISS THIS ONE. It's exists in a peculiar universe between the dry wit of Silver Jews and the honky-tonk don't-give-a-fuck of George Jones, with the nerdy awareness of Paul Barman. Right? It's actually more like a famous art gallery piece seen at Yerba Beuna Center for the Arts and touring with Animal Collective, Xiu Xiu, and Tracy and the Plastics. Oh and wait - Skeptic Tank is Mike Dillon the rock cacophany of crystal gravy. Sorry if my bootstraps poet style totally reveals absolutely nothing about the music, it's my one failing as a schedule author. I defer to Mr. Dillon's crazzee stylee - ". . . pianos, moogs, bass, double drums . . . agitated
vocals . . . reminds me of spare PiL, Junior Mervin and Psychic TV . . . just a cacophony of insanity." Vaguely Christian-Babymaker is the same KevCole from Hispanic Dance Club, but more like a meld duo and less like a jumping monky party. A dj set by Feral Pony to start the night - tinkling bone(r)s and back n'forth rockingmotions in french.
Fri 2/23 - Cantwell, Gomez, & Jordan / Opening Flower Happy Bird / Apis Bull - 10 PM $5 - This is a night of fractured pop, art rock, slicing, dicing and a SPECIAL APPEARANCE by mr. Joshua Willis of Boner Machine in his band Strap-on-Dance-a-Thon with Come, Sweat, and Tears. Really.
Sat 2/24 - FrequeNC Records Night - Taradactyl / Blacks on Blondes / DJs Motherbrothers / Viva (WXDU) - 10 PM $5 - Taradactyl is an elxtro metal group from Emerald Isle. I know at first brush that might seem a little bizarre, but it makes perfect sense to me - nothing says dance party like sand, beer, wind, and metal. They havea vocoder here, a synth over there, a beach ball bouncing around, hellacious beats. A perfect companion to the tree-top rock anthems of Blacks on Blondes - rock filtered through the gigantic speakers in the back of a chromeo-lincoln continentale. Viva (dave) from WXDU makes his first appearance at Nightlight as a performer since Jett Rink was still ttogether, which makes this night eXtra special, since we already have djs Motherbrothers on the bill, seminal County Line party people and just plain ole good FOLX. This is part of the ongoing frequenc records party series.
Wed 2/28 - Brass Castle / Calloused Hands - 10 PM $5 - Brass Castle is from Athens, GA (oh shit I might have that wrong I really need to check my notes on that one) and they play a beautiful breed of southern rock that cleanses the fog from my sunday morning red eyes and gets me back on the path to cut-offs and lemonade (spikey lemonade). It's that great arena of rock that evolved out of Led Zeppelin and the Who but got turned around on a back road and ended up in Roky Erikson's North Georgia mud-boggin party race. Calloused Hands makes their Nightlight debut playing sweet and goofy/groovy soul/country.
Thurs 3/1 - Dance Party w/ The 63 Crayons / The Young Sinclairs / A is Jump - 10 PM - 63 Crayons psychedelic post-punk electronica act from Athens, GA. It is quite pleasing and tasteful, like orange marmalade. Invoking a little bit of Skeletons, a little Ghostly Int'l feel to it. Moving along at a pleasant clip, music for the contemplation of swirling tapestries and lava lamps.
SAT 3/03 - NIgHTLIgHT Fourth Year Anniversary Party with SOUTHERN MAN!!! / BOYZONE / DJ FAMILY VACATION / DJ NASTY BOOTS / PYKRETE PERCUSSION UNIT 10 PM - Isaac comes back to town with John and we will have a big fukkin party, no doubt says Jah. (Isaac, for the uninitiated, Trogdon, co-founder of Nightlight and former holder of what is now my job). Breathe. Boyzone is a pile of tarot cards on fire with cerberus the 999 headed dog swirling fiercely. Constantly revolving line-up and a bevy of performance art, dance music, and heavy industrial noise all get rolled into one cute little package most often geared towards 13 year old girls. If you aren't in the jokes yet join the club. Like the micro-club in your jeans when you hop on the dance floor when DJ Family vacation, aka Admit It aka Smuggler, drops sick asssssss tight jean clean jamz like Baltimore Club styles and impossible to find Baile Funk skunk dip-dap. Pykrete Percussion Unit is the special one-shot-in-the-Ford Theatre but not melancholy like Lincoln, more like maybe a learned hippie drum circle swirling around a cone of deep love jams and proud, dark noise. This SHOW is GOING to RULE.
Wed 3/07 - Frank Gratkowski + the Triangular Quartet - 8 PM - Frank is a seriously talented and amazing reed player from Koln, Germany who will be playing some of his compositions with a group of local jazz musicians. This show is being organized by Ian Davis of the Impermanence Trio. $5
Thurs 3/08 - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea / Eberhardt - 10 PM $5 This is the beginning of a weekend of most excellent quality. And a rundown - you're gonna need a massage, some vodka tonics, and ear plugs. Guitar picks may be left behind. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea play an unabashed metal. No quirks or tricks or strings or playin around, no experimentation, but rather soem GODDAMN FUCKING METAL and you should be goddamn grateful. Eberhardt is the slightly moody and slightly affected duo of Colin and Rebekkah of Durham, we loves you.
Fri 3/09 - Asthmatic Kitty Reps Castanets / Shapes and Sizes / The Physics of Meaning / Auxiliary House - 10 PM $6 - Castanets has the flair of Americana at odds with the danger of neglected broken glass. It's a contrast to your inward journey, mixed together with a devotion to Leonid showers. Raymond Raposa tells us how to forget Johnny Cash and simultaneously recall the unheard hallucinations of a haunted house night out on the range. It's pastels and fried pastries, thumping heartbeats and symphonic murmers of guitars and drums, synths, vocals, harmonicas, twists, turns, and mirrors. Shapes and Sizes are from British Columbia, but the coldness of Canada has almost passed by Vancouver. In it's place resides the calm collected sound of Shapes and Sizes, which shows off their collected devotion to exploiting their talents for the unending quest for sonic fission. Our locally famous door killers Aux House are the Trekky Records house band, and as such they hold down the collective role as (one) herald(s) of a new era in symphonic soft rock with Wu-Tang caliber rosters with endless affiliations. And Oh Fuck Physics of Meaning bring a whole fuse rattling decision of music to sonically massage your broken heart into a taught string of doittoitness.
Sat 3/10 - Boner Machine / Heresee Reps Lexie Mountain Boys / WZT Hearts / Carpark Reps Ecstatic Sunshine - 10 PM $6 This show will be the shit, I teal you. Baltimore is getting famous now, more famouser than an Apple Jacks Mini-wheats sandwhich. Lexie Mountain Boys alone will astonish, and with a scratch of your back, long fingernail style, from 3 in the morning. You're close enough if you listen to Ptak alone at night with the lights out and a sack over your head, but don't tell Mom cuz you'll get in trouble for listening to "Weird Music". But you don't give a shit, you'll play a tape backward through gauze and not skip a beat. Oh yeah, bands. They're all on tour to go to SXSW in Austin, so unless you yourself are going, then you are blessed with a shitton of good music tonight. ExSx live on an instrumental plane that flies low to the ground, under the radar of metal or drone, but rather speeding and slowing through short clicks of songs that heave and twitter like ants on steroids. WZT Hearts kick your ass with confusing allusions to the pantheon of dub and the underbelly of classic rock. We can get but so lucky this every once in a while. That's why we upped the luck quotient so much that LUCKY's ass is getting wet from all the hot drippy anticipation sweat over this mid-march gem of a gem. How did we do it? We got Boner Machine to play what is increasingly becoming a rare show of shows, this time sans-Lauren (big tear) but we will prevail I tells yah! Boner Machine evolves more than the Buddha!
Sun 3/11 - Magik Markers / Quivering Chariots / Three Way Weekend (Spikulas plus Ryan Martin) / Clang Quartet - 9:30 PM - Yes the SXSW train continueth. And it brings back one of the bands from one of the most legendary nightlight shows ever. My primary "celebrity" crush from '05, alongside Stevie Nicks Rumours-era, was Elisa Ambrogio, who is not really a sweet-looking girl, at least in some of these Ecstatic Peace videos. Maybe she looks sweet, but she acts like a demon when she throws her guitar on the floor and rants improvised nastiness at a crowd of bewildered and excited crowd hogs. As a "front person" she certainly holds down her role, being a focal point, at least visually and aggressively. However, it is Pete Nolan's incredible drumming that creates, incubates, or rather rounds inward, the sound of Magik Markers, which makes all of these live recordings CDrs so valuable, beyond their loose reproduction of/connection to the live histrionics. NEWS FLASH - Leah "Queequeg" Quimby is no longer in the band! Check the noise tabloid for more info, maybe I don't know what the deal is or not! For a true introduction, through this hollow opinion, pick thee up NxCxHxCx. It may not have the inaccessible sonic-scrunch beauty of I Trust My Guitar etc., but for an equally hard to find and all around rarity, it certainly has helped me understand what the fuck I am doing when I paint myself red and writhe on the floor, and for that I am grateful, my friends. The MxMx live set from Nightlight made it onto the Europe Tour live CDr, which someone (chuck j?) picked up when the Markers opened up for Dinosaur Jr. at the Cradle. I think their format is much more well-suited to the antique book graveyard and Bargain Bin escapades than to the cheaply produced digital reproduction circular plastic junk. You can buy some books again. Clang on. Scotty's irreversible presence at NxLx is unstoppable, you are so lucky he lives in your back yard. Rox and Rach, the Spikula twins, are gonna play something too, and bring a vehicle full of folx with them. We only await the final line-up and flash-in-a-pan nomen. And the ensemble games continues, although this next band actually has a name as of today morn - Quivering Chariots with Clarque, Chris, and Todd reviving old feelings about rock and roll through new paradigms born in smelly houses (j/k) and slide-show projectors. A surprise waiting to surprise us, this line-up brings nothing but curiosity, mostly borne from horny Girl Scouts.
Thur 3/15 - Tea and Treason anti-capitalist tools and crafts exhibit (a dance party to follow) - 10 PM Texas sez "Call for contributions! The Institute for Experimental Freedom would like your help for an
anti-capitalist muse.um of natural sciences to occur one night at the
Nightlight in Chapel Hill, NC. Contribute any object of anti-capitalist
resistance—from a bag of rocks to a DIY sex toy. Prepare a small display
with a note card containing the historical and or present uses of the
object as a tool or craft of anti-capitalism. Submission information must
be emailed to: ief-southeast(at)riseup.net no later than March 8th to
appear on the program.
Tea and Treason 2.0 will function similarly to last month, but will
maintain a 2 hour beginning session of gallery-esc atmosphere and will be
followed up with a proceeding dance party.
Sat 3/17 - Dance Party w/ Reeshard, Mas (means more, like more djs) - 10:30 PM Free before midnight, $2 beyond that.
Thurs 3/22 - Sunburned Hand of the Man / White Mice / In the Year of the Pig / Gown - 10 PM Psychedelic, swirling wedgies, fudge, acid - yes we have all had our share of drug-induced conciousness-raising no? Sunburned Hand of the Man exist almost as if they were guerilla henchmen for the somewhat theoretical new weird america free-folk-noise category. Like Jets or Sharks or Sweat Hogs or Decepticons. I say that only because band photos seem to reveal as much. As such, they also seem to fulfill a prophecy that for the new millenium we will all cease our whining and complaining and really just focus on scattering our brains all over a fret board like so many chopped up fried oatmeal balls. What does all this nonsense have to do with tonight's show, is the lingering question no doubt. I am letting you know that Sunburned Hand of the Man are coming to push away the murmurs that they are just a bunch of hippies banging gongs, scratching guitar feedback off your neck, and grunting into microphones all night. Oh contraire - they are comin to peel back your scalp, drill into your brain, and bring your inner soul out into the Nightlight, baring your deepest fear for the world to see. That fear is that you love to freak out to weird rock music that is categorically undefinable and exists beyond the limitations of syntax, diction, and casual conversation. It that simple, friends. A free form rock ceremony. SMURF! Onward - White Mice, Providence's laboratory accident with nubby teeth from chewing on jungle gym equipment too much I say!! Why? Cuz they take oscillator and guitar and drums, with giant mice heads and strobe lights and shit and make a fucked up merry-go-round of juvenile deliquency! It is serious entertainment, not for casual passers-by, unless they are fuct on acid or speed. For real, man, the Mice rocked in a lovely way last Nightlight round-trio was like neon-mold on an acapulco gold sponge tongue! Gown makes a return appearance at Nightlight, the same Gown (ecstatic peace) that performed w/Christina Carter way back at our very own Nightlight. And of course I really love In the Year of the Pig - it gets better every time I see them. If you missed them opening for Psychic Paramount, you owe it to yourself to check out this show. And if you saw Psychic Pararmount, you know exactly what I mean. This show is going to rule.
Fri 3/23 - Ecstatic Peace recording artists Black Helicopter / Curtains of Night - 10 PM This will be a rock show. Black Helicopter have stuff out on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace recording label, which is enough cred to net you beaucoup backstage fun at SxSw with tons of hip-hop strippers and money flying through the air. OK, maybe that's an exagerration, I don't know if all those noise rock dudes and freak folk characters really get down like that, but it's fun to imagine. Regardless, expect solid rock in the classic heavy veing, plus the throbbing, screeching punk indie sound of Curtains of Night my pseudo ex roommate Lauren F's (not ford) band. Drums, Guitar, Big Amps, and the Vocals barely get heard over the instruments. You get the pciture - party time.
Sat 3/24 - Frequenc Records Night - JJAK HOGAN / DATAHATA / dj FAMILY VACATION / dj NASTY BOOTS - 10 PM $6 Let the hype begin! What hype? The JJAK HOGAN hype. They played at Nightlight back in December to practically noone, but those of us who were there, including the guy that threw money in the air, know that what JJAK HOGAN brought was suits, class, and deep, dense, and astounding tracks that really complemented the complicated and layered message intoned by the Augusta group. And we are so fukkin lucky that they are coming back! so LUCKY! And then of course we are also lucky because DATAHATA <zeke graves> is playing as well, doing his amoebic and molecular live electronica for the benefit and entertainment of all god's creatures, including the dance-a-lope. Is that silly? I don't know, but I do know that you are silly for not having written this night down in your calendar yet.
Tues 3/27 - Future Islands / Kiss Kiss / Moss of Aura / Thrustlab - 10 PM $5 - Future Islands popularity seems to transcend borders and boundaries, as evidenced by the numerous bands who seem to know not the islands, but "promise" that they can get said band to play with them. It's a runner-up to Des Ark in the category "Most Often Mentioned Band by Other Bands Who Say They Can Bring Out Tons of People but Really Can't". I hope that doesn't sound too insulting to said bands, but Future Islands is really good, unclean fun for fans of Nintendo, Dancing, and Post-Punk. They always bring their friends, they always bring good times, but they don't play for just *anyone*, OK bands?
Thur 3/29 - Ryfylke / Insect with Tits / Phon / Pacific Before Tiger - 10 PM Ryfylke is a tourign Norwegian noise band who have releases on Roggbif, and they are doing a massive US tour that will take them from East to West, North to South, temperate to arid, and one of those stops is our very own Nightlight where we show them what North Carolinians with little shame wear sans day job. That's a clue for the black boots crowd. And Insect with Tits, 804Noise crowd, join Stev Ove and crew for a little bit o NC NOISE scene.
Fri 3/30 - George Steeltoe Ensemble / "Nation, Family, and God" / Esperanto Bat - 10 PM - Free Jazz, death jazz, improv, big line-ups big sound squaeewking and banganganing a not to be missed appearance. George Steeltoe, evolved from "church" sessions in Louisville Kentucky. New album out on Heat Retention. "Nation, Family, and God" is Crowmeat Bob (Savage Knights, Dexter Romweber the New Romans, Kolyma, Cold Sides, countless incarnations of permutating local and touring jazz line-ups, Death Jazz, played with Gratkowski when he came through a few weeks ago) and Jenks Miller (In the Year of the Pig, The Hem of His Garment, Un Deaux Troi).
Sat 3/31 - Le Weekend / Crash / DJ Nasty Boots - 10 PM A party for Steely Dan fans, young hip-hoppers, and Nightlight fanzine editors. For fans of undefinable complicated rock music.
Sun 4/01 - Wesley Willis / Mariah Carey / Drew Barrymore / Creed / DJ Spooky - 10 PM $8 (Tickets on Sale in Advance) - We have entered into a special partnership with our sponsors COCA-COLA and BMW to bring you the international Wesley Willis resurrection tour. This is a special night made only more special because we have hired celebrity bartender Tom Cruise to work this one night only! Please buy your tickets in advance as we expect this show will sell out, since it is very special and Wesley Willis does not come to Chapel Hill very often, most likely because he is dead.
Wed 4/04 - Jack Rose / The Hem of His Garment / Gowns - 10 PM - Jack Rose comes and displays his magical work on the guitar. You should be excited to come see this show and experience exceptional acoustic guitar fingerwork that will melt your body and soul into a sweet puddle of bliss. Gowns is part ex-mae shi, curtains, and amps for christ (5 Rue Christine and Amps for Christ). A melodic loose structure format, a little noisy, should be a perfect companion band to Jack Rose. They are on tour to support their new album, being released on Cardboard Records, which is run by the fine folx at Parts and Labor. I am predixting (predicting with an X) that things can only get better. I defer to the explanatory power of Hem conductor >> Aaron Smithers -- we would approach it a bit differently than allout sonic full body massage so as not to disturb the lovely acoustic brain cleansing melodic drone that is Jack Rose, but still be tough enough to cause some irritable bowels in the most aesthetically pleasing intonated way. Beautiful!
Thurs 4/05 - Hotel Hotel / Revenge of Shinobi / Remora / Clod and Pebble - 10 PM This is a sorta ad hoc showcase of instrumental minded indie bands from the future. Not literally from the future like this guy. From the future when rock has abandoned the legacy of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath for the favor of New York late 1970s Table of the Elements-archived type of feel where ambience really fucking means something. Not overly concerned with marketing anything other than their master command of subtle genres and gentle attention to your needs as a keenakjnkajnkjn. Sorry got distracted by some hed demons.
Sat 4/07 - ARIES BIRTHYDAY PARTY w / DJ Misty Touch / DJ MRTheBest / DJ Reeshard - 10 PM - DJ Mr The Best is Mark from Searchweilder recordings in Asheville, home of crystal power, the historic Biltmore Estate, and tons of high-ass mutherfucggers comin from them thar hills to take you on a ghetto techno ride. One of his last gigs included DJIng a hardcore high school dance party. Nightlight is less rough but still tangy like Cambozola. Reeshard will be doing a double shot only two weeksish apart, giving us a breadth and depth not seen since the last gift basket for yours truly from Martha Stewart's prison buddies. Misty Touch is an old-school Nightlight wax burner with deep deep crates, recently unveiling a funk induced New Age party mix on Valentine's that surprised those who erroneously thought she just did dancehall. For Shame!
Fri 4/13 - Tourist / Andy Abelow / Wes Phillips (formerly of Ticonderoga) / The Love Language - 10 PM $6 A night of shit from all over tthe place, but the central theme is "getting in touch with your inner strum". A pleasant sounding night, to say the least. Sorta like a solo acoustic holistic healing night. No kidding - your bumps and bruises will be soothed by pleasant harmonic vibrations of the least offensive and confrontational manner, fer sure!!! Nuff Sed.
Sat 4/14 - Bruce Eisenbeil with Dave Fox, Pat Lawrence, Jon Marc Ryan Dale / The Punks - 10 PM - Getting crunked on jazz and stoners never been easier. Punks will stone you out and the jazz quartet will improv and sqwark their way to your bone. Punks includes John Chavez of The Free Agency who brings us bands like Barr, Marnie Stern, Castanets, Wooden Wand, Excepter. Come to learn what LA folks do in their garage when they don't play three chord power pop. The Jazz dudes are all upstanding, well versed, established jazz guys who have high degrees of professionalism and they take music to improv status.
Wed 4/18 - Kakerlak / Tourette / Jason Crumer & Lee Combs - 10 PM - Like the pre-NO Future noise off, for the early arrivals looking for something besides indie rock, coke, soda, and dj dance parties. That's kuz this is more like scrackly 90 mile an hour winds full of shrap-nel and loud PAs saying aw fuckitallto hell CLIP IT OUT> See your mind whorl like jelly scratch n sniff death combs.
Thurs 4/19 - DJ Dred Pirate Roberts host of the Batcave Midnight Club (XDU) - 10:30 PM DANZERs comin out like mice.
